Sloppy Joes on Homemade hamburger buns (unfortunately no photo)

I grew up eating these "sloppy Joes"
1lb ground beef
1 onion chopped
1 can chicken gumbo soup
3TBL ketchup
1 TBL mustard
Brown beef with onion. Add other ingredients and simmer 30-60 min.

Upon Getting married and making these for Darcy, he was like, "these are NOT sloppy joes!" apparently traditional sloppy joes have some kind of tomatoe base or product in it. I think ketchup applies. Despite his complaint, I still make the sloppy joe recipe above because It's easy, good, and it's all I've ever known.  I decided to branch out and make a more traditional sloppy joe when I saw this recipe. It has more nutritional value than a normal sloppy joe. It has beans in it. My family really enjoyed this recipe, I even made extra, froze it and pulled it out on a busy day for dinner.
If you want to make your sloppy joes extra special, make homemade buns. These were sooooo good! I don't think I'll ever buy them again!
30 minute hamburger buns
mix and let rest 15 minutes:
3.5 C warm water
3/4 C sugar or 1/2 C honey or molasses
Then add:
1 C oil
6 TBL yeast
1 TBL Salt
3 eggs
10 Cups flour, can use 1/2 whole wheat
Knead to soft dough.  After 15 minute rest, shape into buns. Let rise 10 minutes and bake 15 minutes at 350 degrees or until lightly brown.
*recipe courtesy of Debra who got it from her mother-in-law.

Kristin's note:
I don't know why these are called 30 min buns since it obviously takes 40 min. not including baking, but still fast and well worth the effort. How do you shape dough into buns when you've never seen a bun pre-baked? I just did them like small rolls and then I flattened them a bit so they wouldn't be too poofy. Don't do too big because these expand big time and if they're too big they won't be completely done by the time they're light brown.

  1. Going to have to try those buns. Recently we had a YM/YW activity that was a Bobby Flay style Throwdown and the food was burgers, fries, and shakes. The winning team made homemade buns ahead of time!

I have thought on more than 10 occasions what should i make for dinner? And then i think i could make the same old ten things i always seem to make or i could be like Kristin and make some new amazing thing. I have gone in search on your family blog and then i get tired of looking for the thing i wanted, so yeah... Now its all here. Good job
